You are correct in saying 5/6/7/8 speed sprockets are all the same thickness. ![]() A 9 speed is 9/64", 10 speed is 17/128" and I'm not sure about 11 but I'm not convinced that it's just 10 +1. A 5/6/7/8 chain is the conventional 3/32" gauge. If I could have found a Maeda Suntour/Regina/Sachs Aris without having to psrt with a major organ it would have been on the kit list.įigures. The bearing quality of the used freewheel was stellar in comparison to any modern Chinese stuff. The tooth profile simply didn't matter as I was using friction shifting and I settled on a used Shimano 600EX UG. When I built Clare's bike I needed a freewheel but rejected anything modern on the grounds of longevity. There's an awful lot of Delrin in a modern freewheel and lighter isn't always necessarily better. Partly for indexing but also for production costs. If, however, you compare an old Suntour or Shimano 7 speed cassette or freewheel with a modern one you will find that the sprocket thickness has reduced considerably over the last 30 years.
